The team
Hummingbird Scientific is defined by an insistence on providing the best possible tools for in-situ microscopy. In pursuit of that goal, all our team members are expected to approach customers' requests and specifications with creativity, honesty, and intellectual rigor. That mindset, along with our execution, has allowed Hummingbird Scientific to create revolutionary microscopy products and grow into the stable business it is today.
How we work
People at Hummingbird work close to the instruments they help create. Engineers, machinists, technicians, applications scientists, and microfabrication staff contribute to the same development path, from design, precision parts, and MEMS chips to assembly, calibration, testing, and real microscope performance. With engineering, machining, assembly, calibration, and microscope testing close together in the same facility, people can see how decisions move through the full instrument-building process.
The workspace
We are proud of our offices and workshops. In our open-office environment, every employee receives an ergonomic Aeron chair and solid wood desk. Dual monitors, up-to-date workstations, and headsets to complete our tech setup.
Where we live
Hummingbird is located in the Olympia/Lacey area, surrounded by extensive forests, the Puget Sound, the Olympics, and Mt. Rainier National Park. We are within driving distance of the mountains, beaches, and coast — the best place for hiking, kayaking, climbing, skiing, and camping.

Work across the full instrument-building process

Engineering
Work across first-principles analysis, 3D CAD, prototyping, testing, and validation to help develop advanced microscopy systems through integrated mechanical, software, electronics, and manufacturing work.

Manufacturing and assembly
Build the precision parts and hands-on assemblies that turn instrument designs into working in situ microscopy systems. Our in-house machining, inspection, and assembly work keeps skilled makers close to the final performance of every instrument.

In-house microfabrication
Contribute to the MEMS chips and custom microfabricated devices that make many Hummingbird instruments possible. Our microfabrication work supports gas, liquid, heating, electrical biasing, cryogenic, and custom in situ microscopy workflows.

Calibration and inspection lab
Help measure, inspect, and qualify the performance behind Hummingbird instruments, including thermal, electrical, magnetic, sensor, and system-level behavior.

TEM and cryo-EM labs on site
Work near the microscopes where instrument behavior is evaluated under real use conditions. Our TEM and cryo-EM labs connect design, assembly, calibration, and applications work to the performance researchers need in the microscope.
